Message what's going on inside your engine. If your gauge is riding where it normally would, then your risk of harm is lessened.

Still, I would not drive the car hard until you get a quart out. It's not that hard to stick the oil drain plug back in while there is still oil pouring out (been there, done that). Just gets your hands oily, that's all. You shouldn't have to touch the filter. The guy that put too much in should do it for you for free. If you do it yourself, drain it into something that at least gives you a rough measure, or be sure and take a little extra off since it's easier to top off again from above than to keep draining the oil from below :c)
